![]() ![]() Put simply, snakes are long and limbless reptiles covered in scales belonging to the order Squamata and suborder Serpentes. Have you ever wondered just how many different types of snakes there are? Well that’s exactly what we’re going to be answering in this article. Bundles of straw placed near or between garden rows will provide shelter and cover for hunting spiders.I’ve always found snakes to be one of the most interesting types of animals on the planet. Provide grassy perennials for over-wintering sites. How to attract and conserve spiders: Do not use broad-spectrum insecticides. The flat webs of funnel weavers are often seen stretched over grasses or low bushes sparkling with dew in the early morning, and the spiders may be found lurking at the narrow end of their funnel shaped webs. Jumping spiders are active during the day seeking prey both on plants and on the ground.Ĭrab spiders are found waiting patiently on the plant flowers and leaves that attract their preferred prey. Wolf spiders are active day and night, and may be found on the ground, in or under litter, on low vegetation, or in burrows. ![]() Some web spinners are found in webs constructed barely above the ground, while others are fairly high up in trees or shrubs. Where to find: Spiders are common throughout the garden and landscape, and may be found on the ground, or in herbaceous plants, grasses, trees and shrubs. Daddy longlegs are active hunters of a wide variety of soft-bodied insects, slugs, and mites, and will also scavenge dead insects. The front two pairs of legs are particularly elongated and held out sideways, crablike.ĭaddy longlegs, also called harvestmen, have very long thin legs, globular non-hairy bodies without a distinct head, are brown or grayish, and lack poison (unlike its spider cousins). They create unique flat webs stretched across the ground or between grasses or plants, with a central entry hole which leads into a narrow funnel-shaped web.Ĭrab spiders have bulbous abdomens, are minimally-hairy, and are brightly colored like the flowers and leaves they sit on. Jumping spiders have a very prominent pair of eyes in the middle of the first of 3 rows of eyes.įunnel weavers, or grass spiders, are medium sized, hairy spiders, typically brown in color and may have lighter markings on the back. They are hairy and often have bright colorful markings on a dark, iridescent metallic-colored abdomen. Jumping spiders are very active small to medium sized spiders that may jump several times their body length when attacking prey. The female is unusual in that she carries her egg sack beneath her and her newly hatched spiderlings on her back. Wolf spiders may get quite large, are hairy with long hairy legs, and are dark in color, but may have contrasting lighter markings that help camouflage them. The familiar black and yellow orb spiders (argiope) are frequently found in late summer in their large, beautifully patterned concentric webs that often have a zigzag stripe of webbing down the center. There are many species of orb weaver spiders, ranging in size from small to fairly large, typically black or brown marked with cream or yellow, and minimally hairy. Spiderlings: Resemble adults but are smaller, and frequently have variations in coloring and markings. Spider eggs: Are typically enclosed within a silken sac that may be hung in a web or hidden from sight. Insect(s) fed on: Most spiders are generalists and will eat almost any appropriately sized insect, as well as other spiders and related arthropods. Life stage(s) that feed on pests: Spiderlings and adults. No matter what method they use, though, spiders substantially reduce populations of pest insects in the garden. ![]() Ambush spiders include funnel weaver (or grass), crab (or flower) spiders, and daddy longlegs (a distant relative of spiders) They sit motionless on plants or flowers and pounce in ambush on unwary insects that wander near. Web spinners include the orb weavers.Īmbush, or sit-and-wait, spiders have patience on their side. They patiently wait for their prey to become entangled. Web spinners create silken webs, but have poor vision and rely on the vibrations of insects captured in their webs to detect their prey. They actively hunt down their prey. Hunting spiders include wolf and jumping spiders Hunting spiders have prominent eyes and good eyesight to see their prey, and instead of large webs they construct small silken shelters in which to rest. In spite of the reaction they typically elicit from the average human, all spiders are predators and aid us by eating many garden pests. Spiders are arachnids and have two main body parts (instead of three) and eight legs (instead of six) – what they lack in body parts, they make up for in legs! Spiders are not insects, although they are closely related, but they are true friends to the gardener. ![]()

![]() ![]() Although she was born after the time period when slaves were kept, segregation was still rampant in her area as she grew up, as she was born in Missouri in 1928. It was written in 1978 by an African American woman, which explains why she mentions her ancestors and rising up “from a past that’s rooted in pain.” (31) She is clearly referring to the mistreatment of African Americans in the United States. This historical context of this piece is very important. Rebellion against the views of the racists in society or even just her personal enemies fuels the strong and passionate wording of this poem. Inner strength is the source of her defiance here she never once mentions outside support. By saying she will rise, she means to triumph and overcome. Clearly, she does not mean the violent verbs she uses literally they are used to show the goal the enemy has of bringing her down in society, whether as an individual or as an African American. Just like in the previous excerpt, figurative language is used to make her point. They can aim to hurt her with words, glares, and even just hatred itself, yet they will not succeed. The stanza above supports the same conclusion. However, her optimism makes her believe that their bitterness will only serve to lift her higher, which I interpret as Angelou’s way of saying that what does not kill her will only make her stronger. Instead, she uses it figuratively to tell how they treat her with disrespect. She does not mean “You may trod me in the very dirt,” (3) in a literal sense. Just like dust rises after being stomped upon, she will do the same. She is saying that even if they try to tarnish her legacy with false statements and treat her as if she is worthless, she will not let it impact how she sees herself. Defiant, formidable, and graceful, “Still I Rise” has long taken its rightful place in the Black poetry canon, and we celebrate the great mind of Maya Angelou, who gave us this gift.It is clear from the very first stanza that this poem is meant to stand up against those who aim to crush you: Hate rots, but rising above that hate and into the comforting arms of ancestors and deep self-love is how we grow seeds for ourselves and for the next generation. Much of Angelou’s work has this hymn-like quality, a nod to the influences of Black gospel music.Īnd with the juxtaposition of the violent language and actions of the oppressor-“bitter, twisted lies” and “You may shoot me with your words / You may cut me with your eyes / You may kill me with your hatefulness”-and the lyrical, gentle, joyous language of the oppressed, Angelou is making a clear statement. The natural imagery in this poem, as well as the reference to ancestor pride, makes it transcendent, almost spiritual. Angelou’s rise from oppression creates a cinematic feel of her rising with the tide of that black ocean that carried her ancestors. Play icon The triangle icon that indicates to play It’s no wonder this poem has spoken and continues to speak to Black survivors of sexual violence. There’s something powerful about Angelou, a survivor of child abuse, reclaiming the power and beauty and sensuality on her terms. “Still I Rise” has a special meaning for Black women, with sensual imagery and joyful celebration of Black women’s bodies, which have always been weaponized and exploited. Mandela himself spoke and wrote at length about the importance of maintaining dignity and strength in the face of overwhelming oppression.Īngelou, who grew up in the Jim Crow South and was heavily involved in the civil rights movement, experienced extreme racism and sexism as a Black woman, and that dual experience is reflected in this poem. The late Nelson Mandela even chose this poem for his inauguration in 1994, after spending 27 years in Robben Island prison for his resistance to the South African apartheid government. Published in Angelou’s third poetry collection, And Still I Rise, in 1978, it’s a poem about overcoming injustice and prejudice, and the immutable strength of the human spirit. Everything about this poem-the repetition, the natural imagery, its ancestral pride–induces a feeling of soaring whenever read or recited. ![]() Maya Angelou’s iconic poem “Still I Rise” has had an impact on the world that will echo throughout generations, especially for Black women. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Township argued on summary judgment that eminent domain proceedings are not covered by RLUIPA.
